SMALL MOLECULES

Chemical
Entities <2kD

DAISOGEL spherical silica gels were launched in 1992. At that time, the most common active pharmaceutical ingredients were traditional small molecule therapeutics. These products were the first applications for analysis and preparative purification using DAISOGEL.

Chemical entities such as paclitaxel for cancer treatment, beta blockers for hypertension, and statins for hypercholesterolemia were some of the top-selling pharmaceuticals in the 1990s. These entities are usually chemically synthesized and have a molecular weight of less than 2 kD – hence the term “small molecule.”

Scores of small molecules remain important treatment options today, especially as a multitude of competitively-priced generic options are available.

Typical Applications

Examples of small molecules purified with DAISOGEL products

Alkaloids

Pyridine Derivatives

Organic Acids

Steroids

Beta Blockers

A Variety of Phases

Hydrophobic small molecules are purified using reversed phase chromatography – including ODS, C8, or C4 bonded phases.
For hydrophilic compounds or HILIC separations, consider our APS phase.
